Physiatry (also called physical medicine and rehabilitation) is the medical rehabilitation specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disease, primarily using "physical" means, such as physical therapy and medications. It is often referred to as the “quality of life” profession because its aim is to restore optimal resident functioning.
Physiatry addresses how the "whole" person functions and generally uses a team approach to see the entire picture. This whole-person view encompasses treatment or referral for medical conditions, pain management, or occupational therapy. Physiatrists try to make certain that everything residents need to get on with their lives is in place. The Physiatrist does not replace the resident’s primary physician.
Fairview uses the consultative services of a Physiatrist on a weekly basis to lead the team for rehabilitation as prescribed for residents in Fairview’s Medicare Rehabilitation service or other levels of living.
